About Course

21-day approach for “rewiring” automatic stress responses in kids

Scientific literature supports that people can learn to regulate amygdala activation (e.g., via real-time fMRI neurofeedback) and that focused training can change amygdala/prefrontal connectivity. This validates the concept that repeated, guided practices can help children learn calmer responses.

Stress system (HPA axis) and amygdala reactivity are well-documented contributors to persistent anxiety/heightened alarm states in children — interventions that reduce chronic stress reactivity are therefore appropriate targets.

Goal: gently retrain a child’s automatic threat system so “relaxing” ceases to be interpreted as dangerous. The program is trauma-sensitive, parent-led (or clinician-supported) and uses short daily practices, play, somatic regulation, and gradual re-conditioning. Each day = 20–30 minutes of structured activity + micro-practices during the day (2–5 minutes each). For children under 7 shorten to 10–15 minutes and make it play-based.

Safety first: screen for current trauma/PTSD, suicidality, medical conditions. If the child has significant trauma or mental-health symptoms get clinician oversight. Do not force exposure; use co-regulation and choice.

Overview of the Weeks and Information for Start
Overview (week themes) Week 1 — Calm Foundations (Days 1–7): teach body signals, breath, safe place visualization, predictable routine. Week 2 — Regulate & Rewire (Days 8–14): apply interactive regulation (games, rhythmic movement, safe exposure), start short “practice exposures” to small stress triggers while using regulation toolkit. Week 3 — Integrate & Generalize (Days 15–21): real-life application, social practice, parental coaching for reinforcement, relapse plan.

  • Why this approach is plausible (neuroscience & evidence)
  • Important Cautions & When to Refer
  • Measurement & Tracking (simple)
  • Parental coaching (key points)
  • Daily structure (every day)
  • Days 1–3 — Introduce safety & signals
  • Days 4–7 — Breath & vagal toning
  • Days 8–10 — Name the alarm; reframe
  • Days 11–13 — Safe exposure & orchestration
  • Days 14–16 — Strengthen prefrontal control with games
  • Days 17–19 — Real-world application & social practice
  • Days 20–21 — Consolidate and plan sustainment

WEEK 1 – “Safe Body, Calm Brain”
WEEK 1 – “Safe Body, Calm Brain” Theme: Creating safety and body awareness. Brain Principle When children feel safe in their bodies, the amygdala relaxes and the prefrontal cortex (focus & speech center) re-engages. Objectives • Build awareness of bodily cues. • Associate calmness with positive attention. • Introduce play-based breath and grounding. • Activities & Games

WEEK 2 – “Reset the Nerves”
WEEK 2 – “Reset the Nerves” Theme: Reframing fear into excitement and confidence. Brain Principle The amygdala can’t distinguish between fear and excitement — labeling changes neural response. Objectives Teach re-labeling: “I’m excited, not scared.” Introduce regulation through rhythm, movement, laughter. Practice self-talk and visualization.

WEEK 3 – “Confident Expression”
WEEK 3 – “Confident Expression” Theme: Calm action and self-trust under gentle pressure. Brain Principle Exposure with safety teaches the brain that visibility = safe. Gradual success rewires old fear patterns. Objectives • Practice staying calm while being seen or heard. • Rehearse emotional control under mild stress. • Anchor new associations of joy and confidence.
